Alpitude Brandtal ODC - 12s Rear Derailleur Carbon Cage with Oversize Pulleys and Ceramic Bearings - From 69 gr.

Alpitude Brandtal ODC is a gear cage kit complete with pulleys for Shimano or Sram 12s rear derailleurs. It replaces the original components guaranteeing better performances, adding a touch of personality and exclusivity to your bicycle.

The cage is of the semi-aero type with an aerodynamic closed profile, created by structurally joining two monocoque carbon fiber molded rocker arms. The result is a component with almost monolithic characteristics that guarantees great rigidity and resistance with a low weight. It should therefore not be compared with products made from a banal flat sheet, the specific design and the most valuable production technology allow shapes to be optimized to obtain a superior result in aerodynamic, structural and aesthetic terms.

The cage features a predominantly unidirectional (UD) carbon weave finish with two portions of 3k Twill weave at the bottom of the cage (on both sides). On the external side, however, near the lower pulley, there is a 7075T6 aluminum insert made using CNC solid machining, which can be chosen in 4 different anodized colors that match the pulleys (black, gold, turquoise, gunmetal) and on which the writing "Alpitude" is laser engraved. The hardware, i.e. the fixing pin to the gearbox and the threaded bushes onto which the pulleys are screwed, is also made of 7075T6 CNC aluminum with a black anodized finish.

The pulleys are of the Oversize type and have 14 teeth (upper pulley) and 17 teeth (lower pulley), they are made of 7075T6 aluminum by CNC solid machining, and can be chosen in 4 different anodized colors (black, gold, turquoise, gunmetal) which match the side insert on the cage. The shape of the pulleys and the profile of the teeth is differentiated between the upper and lower pulley, both are unloaded to optimize the weight, but the teeth of the upper pulley are more accentuated to guarantee greater shifting precision, while those of the lower pulley are less pronounced to optimize smoothness. 

The pulley bearings are of the hybrid ceramic type with very high smoothness but also very resistant to wear and corrosion thanks to the ceramic spheres and the stainless steel cage. These are high quality bearings that are assembled to very tight tolerances and individually calibrated to ensure the best possible performance. They are obviously equipped with external dust covers made to measure for the pulleys. The bolts that fix the pulleys are special made of grade 5 titanium with a lowered head and a black galvanic finish.  

The Brandtal ODC cage kit is available in two different versions :

• SHIMANO - Compatible with Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 and Ultegra Di2 12s rear derailleurs - 69 grams weight
• SRAM - Compatible with Sram AXS 12s rear derailleurs - 75 grams weight

The weight saving compared to the original rear derailleur configuration is minimal, but we should think from the perspective of a system with oversized pulleys and in this case it becomes more evident compared to competing products which often weighs over 100 grams.

Weight saving, however, is not the main advantage of the Brandtal ODC cage kit, in fact the benefits in terms of smoothness are much more evident thanks to the larger diameter pulleys (the chain follows a path with less sharp curves which reduce friction and wear of the chain itself) and the very low friction ceramic bearings. The semi-closed profile of the faired cage ensures better aerodynamic efficiency while the oversized carbon fiber structure guarantees greater rigidity and, combined with the optimized aluminum pulleys, also more precise shifting. We leave the aesthetic aspect for last which is certainly subjective but the elegant and refined design of the Bradtal ODC cage kit is almost always appreciated and turns out to be one of the most iconic elements in every Dream Bike worthy of the name, the Alpitude brand has in fact achieved a decidedly high status among enthusiasts of the most exclusive and refined handcrafted components.

Installing a Brandtal ODC cage kit is a rather simple operation that does not require any particular equipment or skills but only common sense and attention. Adequate instructions are provided and a useful video tutorial is available. The only recommendation is to use a new chain when assembling the cage kit, this for two simple reasons: the first is that since the diameter of the pulleys is increased the chain loop is longer and consequently a chain with a few more links is needed compared to the original configuration, the second reason is that a used chain, and consequently already lengthened, would create problems on the profile of the teeth of the new pulleys, wearing them prematurely and creating harmful friction which could not only undermine the advantages of smoothness but also worsen shifting performance.
