The Extralite HyperBoost3 R is a light and refined rear hub for MTB use (XC, Marathon, All Mountain, Trail, Enduro) equipped with the Boost standard, therefore compatible only with frames with a 148 mm width and 12 mm diameter thru axle. The brake disc rotor attachment is the classic 6-hole International Standard.
It is a hub equipped with Straight-Pull flanges for straight pull spokes which guarantee greater wheel stiffness, less lateral flexibility and greater reactivity in transmitting the drive torque. It is possible to choose between 24-spoke or 28-spoke flanges. The sizing of the hub body is such as to ensure the best possible balance of the spoke tension on both sides of the wheel and allows the use of spokes of the same length on both sides of the wheel and on both wheels.
The hub body is entirely machined from solid through sophisticated CNC numerical control machining from a special 7075Txx aluminum bar, shapes and thicknesses are optimized to provide the best compromise between strength and weight with a truly captivating look. With the same material and philosophy are also made the freewheel body and the axle which has an oversize diameter of 17 mm and variable thickness and the external end caps. The hub body has a black anodized finish with white laser graphics, while the freewheel body and the axle end caps have an hard anodized finish to ensure greater durability and resistance by being in direct contact with the cassette and the frame.
The HyperBoost3 R has been optimized in design to provide the best possible stiffness when combined with the BlackLock series thru-axles, produced in various standards by Extralite. You can always find BlackLock thru-axles in our shop.
The freewheel system is a front engagement type, also now in its third generation is super-engineered and optimized. The floating ring has been lightened by 20% compared to the previous version and thus guarantees a faster engagement, reducing noise and drag. The system is available with both 36 points of engagement (greater durability and reliability, less sensible to micro-tuner adjust, suitable also for E-bike use) and 48 points of engagement (faster engagement for maximum racing performance).
The seat on which the floating ring slides in the hub body has also been optimized in such a way as to simplify maintenance and offer 35% longer life. To protect the system from dirt there are both the double sliding protections of the 2RS bearings and a specific polyurethane lip seal made specifically for the HyperBoost3 R and able to withstand a long time.
The freewheel body is available in 3 different standards: Shimano MTB 11s, Sram XD 11/12s and Shimano MicroSpline 12s ; each of which produced in both 36 and 48 point of engagement versions. The Shimano MicroSpline 12v version is equipped with a specific lock ring that must be used in place of the original Shimano one, to tighten the drivetrain cassette.
The HyperBoost3 R hub body rotates on a pair of sealed bearings with 2RS double protection, one 6803 (17x26x5 mm) on disc brake side and one oversized 6903 (17x30x7 mm) on drivetrain side which is an heavy duty bearing that can support up to 250 kg load, on request it is possible to have the oversized 6903 bearing also on the disc brake side with a total weight increase of about 8 grams. The freewhel body rotates on a pair of 6803 (17x26x5 mm) 2RS bearings.
The bearings fitted as standard are excellent ABI 440c stainless steel with great resistance to corrosion and consequently suitable for MTB use, especially in severe conditions with water and mud. As an option, it is also possible to mount hyper Ceramic hybrid ceramic bearings or Enduro XD-15 ceramic bearings. Whatever the type of bearing chosen, Extralite pays great attention to the coupling between bearing, hub body and axle, selecting the components based on tolerances in order to guarantee the best smoothness and durability. There is also an external adjustment system of the axial play and pre-load of the bearings which allows to maintain the best smoothness and to extend the life of the bearings as they wear. The HyperBoost3 R hub is also equipped with a protection system against dirt and external agents thanks to the o-rings that further protect the bearings despite the fact that they are already equipped with double sliding protection. These precautions allow an excellent life of the bearings despite the reduced size and weight.
With a weight of only 148 grams (28h, XD freewheel body, ceramic bearings, 6803 disc brake side bearing), the HyperBoost3 R is the lightest MTB Boost rear hub in the world, it allows a considerable weight saving, but it does so without compromising reliability and performance, thanks to the precautions adopted and the great build quality and materials used. Stock 440c stainless steel bearings adds only 2 grams of weight, so the HyperBoost3 R weighs only 150 grams in the same configuartion (28h, XD freewheel body, 6803 disc brake side bearing).
